Chapter 12
Kate placed her cell phone down quietly on the desk, staring at it still.
Rodney walked over and said, âYou keep looking at your phone these days.â
âI need to access the traffic cams on the Lions Gate Bridge,â she said abruptly.
âAnother jumper?â
âIâm not sure,â she said, trying not to say too much because she didnât want to explain. Simon was already tormented by this. The last thing she needed was others weighing in on his potential inability to handle this stress. Or his bizarre messages. Particularly after what had already happened to his friend David. On that note, she checked her watch, remembering that Louisa had asked for the laptop back. She hadnât bugged the Computer Forensics guys and gals for more, but she had asked, and the least she could do was try to get it back for her.
As she waited for access to the traffic cams, she contacted her computer nerds. As soon as the phone was answered, Stoop said, âYes, Iâm done with the laptop.â
âPerfect. Anything on that license plate?â
âYes, weâre working on it,â he said. âThe video isnât 100 percent clear, so weâre trying to clean it up.â
âGood enough,â she said. âThatâs progress.â
âHey, weâll take any progress we can get at the moment.â
âI know,â she said. âIâm still working on that whole suicide thing too.â
âI canât imagine thatâs even feasible,â he said, âbut I get why you donât want to let it go.â
âWhat about those chats and emails?â
âWeâre still working on that one.â
âOkay. Iâll check with Andy, since heâs our decoy account on the chats.â
âYeah, and make sure he doesnât commit suicide under some of the pressure from these guys.â
âAre they that convincing?â
âItâs kinda weird,â he said. âIâve been monitoring a bunch of the chats. So far, itâs mostly supportive, but then you get those little passive-aggressive digs, like âYouâre just too scared,â or âYou know the world will be happier without youâ and that sort of thing. And then that odd follow-up with, âHey, I was just kiddingâ or something of the like.â
âYeah, yet they arenât kidding at all.â
âWell, thatâs the thing, right? I mean, you get these kinds of assholes all the time, and theyâre everywhere. You just donât expect to see them on a chat like this.â
âBut then why not?â she said quietly. âWhen you think about it, assholes are on every loop. Look at every one of the big sites where you can comment on any subject, and youâll find trolls.â
âTrolls, trolls, and more trolls,â he said. âI was just hoping on a site like this that they would be more supportive.â
âBut, at first glance, they probably are, arenât they?â
âYes, exactly. Supportive and teasing and mocking, all at the same time.â
âI get it,â she said. âI really do. I just wondered if more than one person is making these mocking comments or whether itâs really just one person using multiple accounts.â
âThatâs an interesting point too. People do have multiple accounts in various places, so itâs possible. I donât know why they would though.
